Incomplete & Retired Matches
Matches that were in progress but not completed are reported as either an "Incomplete" or as a "Retired" match. Because the scoring is handled differently between the two, it is important that you clearly understand the difference prior to reporting scores.
When reporting scores, report the score exactly as it was at the time the match was stopped. The system will prompt you for the circumstances as to why the match was incomplete.
As the Result of a Player/Team = Retired
When a match is incomplete as the result of one player/team it is considered a "Retired" match. Circumstances that fall under a "retired" match may include:- Cannot continue due to injury or illness
- Leaves due to personal reasons
- Failed to reserve enough court time to complete the match
- Failed to provide a court with working lights during evening play
- A Player or team refuses to complete a match due to a disagreement
The "retired" team will lose the match, but will receive points for all games completed prior to stopping play, (up to a maximum of 8 points). The opposing team receives the win and will receive either 12 or 14 points. When reviewing divisional standings, the retired team's score will be noted with an "R" indicating they retired the match. The winner's score will be noted with a "W" indicating they received a walkover. Since the match was not completed, neither team will receive a rating.
A Sporting Solution: Provided there is ample time, the opponents of the retired team has the option of continuing the match at a later date if they elect to. This is done at their sole discretion. If the match is resumed, we recommend that the retiring team travel to the opponent's home court to complete the match as compensation for the inconvenience.
Not the Result of a Player/Team = Incomplete
A match that was not completed as a result of inclement weather is considered an "Incomplete" match and stands as played. Teams may choose one of two options.- Reschedule the match and resume play exactly where the match stopped. Only the original players may resume a match already in progress. New balls must be provided by the home player if there has been more than a two day break in play.
- Elect to receive points for all games completed at the time play stopped up to a maximum of 10 points. Neither team will receive the win. Scores for both teams will be noted with a "N". Since the match was not completed, neither team will receive a rating.
- If one team wants to complete the match before the assigned deadline, and the opposing team is not willing to complete the match: the team wanting to complete the match shall receive the win. The match should be reported as "retired" when reporting scores. The retired team will receive points for all games completed prior to stopping play, (up to a maximum of 8 points).
Why scoring deadlines?
The Ultimate Tennis match format was designed to provide a balance between flexibility and structure that works well for most people's schedules. League history has proven that time limits are an absolute necessity for the league to function properly and keep players on track. Without due dates, even as few as two players delaying matches until the end of the season would lead to massive defaults paralyzing entire divisions and creating widespread frustration. With the advent of time limits, non responsive players can be replaced early in the season preserving play for our active members. Ultimate Tennis has worked hard to earn the reputation of a "player's league" where members are responsive and uphold their commitment to complete their matches. Please note, if hard deadlines were not absolutely necessary for the league to run we would not require them. Thank you for your understanding and your commitment.
